Heysel Stadium disaster 1985 (Liverpool – Juventus)

The European Cup game final between Liverpool and Juventus in 1985 was played in Brussels, the capital of Belgium. Shortly before kick off the atmosphere turned violent. Outside the ground small groups of English and Italian fans fought with eachother. Inside the stadium the violence continued. After some provocations the English supporters stampeded through a thin line of police towards the Juventus fans. As the Italians in the frontline retreated some of the others in the back were pressed against the stadium wall. People were crushed and trampled to death in the panic. After a while the wall collapsed, causing the death of even more people. It was complete chaos and many supporters were on the pitch for their own safety. Most of the Juventus supporters were furious and the riots continued for a long time.  39 people lost their lives this day and a further 600 were injured. Depsite all this the game still started. The authorities were afraid there would be more trouble if they cancelled the game. A lot of documentaries are made about this day.
